“FestAfrica 2008” Showcases African Culture in Baltimore
Aug 9&10
Baltimore, MD – Baltimore’s Patterson Park
will become “Africa Town” during the 6th annual African
festival, “FestAfrica 08,” (formerly called Naija Fest)
to be held on Saturday Aug. 9 (Noon - 8 p.m.) and on Sunday Aug.
10 (Noon – 8p.m) at Patterson Park, the corner of Eastern
Ave. and Linwood Ave. Admission fee is $5 and free for ages 10 years
and under.
Showcasing different African countries’ music, dance, arts,
crafts, fashion and cuisine, the festival promises its guests a
fun-filled voyage to different regions ofAfrica without the 14-hour
flight and sometimes costly plane ticket. FestAfrica 08 will feature
international and local African bands performing contemporary and
traditional Afro-beat and rhythms. The festivities will include
traditional dance performances, fashion shows, art & craft workshops,
dance lessons, instrument demonstrations, games, face painting,
story telling, vendors, African cuisine, a health fair with free
screenings and a Career Fair/Business Expo.
This is the official African festival for Maryland organized by
various African organizations in Maryland and cosponsored by Baltimore
Mayor Sheila Dixon, the Baltimore Office of Promotions and the Maryland
State Arts Council.
The festival reflects the large African population in Maryland and
Washington DC. According to the U.S. Census 2000, Maryland and Washington,
D.C. have the two highest numbers of African immigrants in the United
States making up almost 2 percent of its total population.
