The annual African Festival “FestAfrica” is seeking to fill the positions in the Sponsorship, Promotions, and Vendor committees. Candidates will work as interns alongside the festival planning committee in fundraising, securing sponsors, promotion, and community outreach. This year, the 11th Annual celebration of African Culture and Heritage at the Silver Spring Civic Center, Veterans Plaza, in Downtown Silver Spring, MD from 1-8p.m on both days. Below are individual internship descriptions for each position. Intership opportunities within entertainment, fashion show, logistics, Government Liaison, and FestAfrica Honors Awards committees are also available and listed below.

SPONSORSHIP COORDINATOR INTERN

The ideal candidate:

o Should have at least 1 year experience with Fundraising and Sponsorship
o Strong writing and verbal communication skills (Grant writing a plus)
o Energetic and hardworking
o Able to work independently and take initiative with little supervision
o Have good people skills, enjoy talking and meeting with people
o Have some experience and interest in event planning
o Able to multi-task and work fast within tight deadlines
o Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point

Responsibilities will include:

o Grant writing to potential business sponsors and donors to request funding.
o Write applications for public and private grants that support Art programs.
o Community outreach and follow ups
o Assist in planning and carrying out fundraising events and activities.
o Brainstorm ideas for fundraising campaigns and activities to generate income
o Communicate with other festival staff members to ensure that benefits to sponsors are carried out.

Time Commitment: Part time (minimum 10-15 hours per week)

PROMOTIONS COORDINATOR INTERN

The ideal candidate:

o Should be highly organized
o Should be enthusiastic and charismatic when it comes to communicating with interested parties
o Should be energetic, courteous, and resourceful
o Highly professional and dependable
o Able to work with a team and/or independently
o Have at least 1 year of experience in promotions / marketing / or public relations
o Strong writing and verbal communication skills
o Pre-existing connections with other organizations, affiliates, or promotion teams
o Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point

Responsibilities will include:

o Handling all Public Relation tasks
o Updating and maintaining Social Networks sites (i.e Facebook, Twitter)
o Writing and distributing press releases to media to include TV, Radio, Print and On-line publications
o Working alongside graphic designers to create fliers and other marketing tools
o Setting, conducting, and partaking in interviews with various affiliates
o Community outreach initiatives (visiting churches, attending social events such as parties, galas and the like)
o Enhancing the overall image of the organization by producing a great and exciting event.

Time Commitment: Part time (minimum 10-15 hours per week)

VENDOR COORDINATOR INTERN

The vendor coordinator intern will support the Vendor Director in recruiting, registering and coordinating all current and potential vendors for the festival.

The Ideal Candidate must be:

o Energetic and hardworking
o Able to work independently and take initiative with little supervision
o Have good people skills—must enjoy talking and meeting with people
o Have some experience and interest in event planning
o Must be able to multi-task and work fast within tight deadlines
o Strong writing skills
o Must have good leadership skills
o Must be proficient with Microsoft Excel, Word and Power Point

Duties and Responsibilities:

o Assist the Vendor Director with all duties required of the vendor committee for the festival.
o Work with festival planning committee members to brainstorm new creative ideas for the festival and help in implementing ideas.
o Coordinate vendor registration
o Communicating regularly (responding to phone calls and emails ) with vendors
o Community outreach (attending local festivals in Maryland/D.C region) to recruit new vendors
o Update and maintain Microsoft Excel contact spreadsheet of all vendors
o Support Promotions Directors with distribution of event flyer to community
o Work closely with Logistics Director in ensuring all vendor related logistic tasks are completed (i.e space allocation, city permit rules and regulations, and the like)

Time Commitment: Part time (minimum 10-15 hours per week)

Current volunteer positions (that can potentially turn into internships) are available for those interested in entertainment, fashion show, logistics, Government Liaison, and Awards coordinator. Listed below are brief volunteer responsibilities for each.

Entertainment:

o Supporting Entertainment Director with research and format for entertainment line-up for both days
o Communicating and working as a liaison with potential entertainers
o Updating and maintaining entertainment contact sheet
o Creating performance line up for both days
o Working closely with graphic designer to ensure entertainers are properly displayed on fliers
o Working with Promotions Directors to ensure proper publicity is given to headlining and supporting acts
o Working alongside stage managers to ensure smooth flow of performances, while also contacting and ensuring performers are present to perform

Fashion Show:

FestAfrica is excited to announce that this is our 15th year anniversary and we would love for you to joined us! Be apart of our amazing fashion team; You will also have a chance to be apart of our upcoming photo-shoot in April. (You must sign up by March 31th to qualify) We will feature these photos on all our social media platforms. (Festafricausa.com, Instagram, Twitter & Facebook). Again you must submit your application to FestAfrica.Fashion@gmail.com by March 31th. (Application is on our website – Festafricausa.com) FEW designers will be selected!

o Must be able to attend all fittings, casting calls, and be present both days of the festival.
o Must be able to assist in organizing model and designer information and communicate with them effectively when required.
o Must be able to assist in promoting model castings calls and Fest Africa 2 day festival.
o Must be present for conference calls and meetings within the fashion show committee.
o Must be able to assist show director with set up, ensuring the environment is clean and tidy, and assist models and designers when needed.
o Help organize, review, and finalize final garments for showcase.

Logistics:

o Working with Logistics Director to ensure all logistical and site needs are met (site layout, assurance of venue, rules and regulations, parking, permits, and the like)

Governmental Official & Ambassador Liaison:

o Preparing FestAfrica invitation letters for County, State, and Federal government, Ambassadors and other diplomatic officials
o Serving as contact person at Government/Embassy related events that will be attended to promote FestAfrica
o Working with Entertainment Director to schedule officials and diplomats during the festival and coordinating logistics of hosting the government officials and diplomats during the festival
o Discuss and develop ideas with Embassy officials that support the theme “Serving and Touring Africa”

Awards coordinator:

o Researching African individuals and/or organizations home and abroad doing extraordinary work to strengthen the African Community
o Prepare letters and contact potential award nominees
o Coordinate hospitality details (hotel lodging and transportation to and from festival site)
o Creating and preparing Plaque information for awardees
o Work with Government / Ambassador liaison to incorporate officials participation

Time Commitment: Part time (minimum 10-15 hours per week)

All positions are great for college graduates, current undergraduate students, or graduate students, but applicants must have at least a high school diploma.

Dedication of Time: Positions are part-time with a weekly minimum of hours requirement, specific to the position you apply for but flexible schedules are available. Duration of internship/volunteer is 5 months (starting in April and ending in August).

Social Activities:  All Interns are encouraged to attend AYA events within the community. This is the best way to get to know the team, be engaged, ask questions, and foster long-lasting relationships.

Professional Development Activities:  Development of personal and professional skills is encouraged and vital during the internship process. We encourage all interns/volunteers to attend assigned monthly meetings and conference calls.

Bridge Program:  Our bridge program allows interns who have shown extensive dedication and commitment, to transition into a more permanent role on the planning committee (working alongside existing directors) should they desire to continue their participation.
